BACKGROUND
For the first time in 20 years, the Norwegian government is opening a new oil frontier in the Arctic, escalating the pressure on the climate and putting homes and families in danger globally. We believe this new round of licensing violates the Norwegian constitution and the Paris Agreement.

Greenpeace Norway and Nature & Youth are taking the Norwegian government to court in a historic lawsuit with proceedings beginning in November. They are challenging the government’s decision to give new licenses to drill oil in the Arctic Barents Sea by awarding blocks in the 23rd licensing round. Statoil began drilling 5-7 wells this summer – one of them is the world’s northernmost offshore well.

The climate lawsuit has a solid foundation in legal competence and many good supporters; however, taking the Norwegian government’s decision to hand out new oil licenses in the Arctic is a costly business. Greenpeace needs to fund their legal team and fund a smart and wide-reaching public awareness campaign.
